This is an autobiography by a marine who served at the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. It goes into detail about what life was like as a soldier (how the food tasted, personal foibles of other soldiers, boot camp life) as well as military events for the battles in question (how troops moved at Peleliu and Okinawa, what engagements were like). I particularly like how the author explained the different ‘flavors’ of the two battles; upon reading this, Peleliu seemed like a more brutal brawl, with both sides fighting dirty to survive. Okinawa was more bloody and grinding, a game of attrition, with the Japanese forcing the Americans to pay for every inch.
Worth reading.
