I’ve not been reading very man books reading, but not for lack of desire. Back in August, I started going back to school to get a second degree, and as a result I’ve been busy with homework. After reading three or four textbook chapters a week, I just don’t have the bandwidth for reading for pleasure. But with the semester wrapping up, I’m finally having enough free time to read for fun again.
‘The Ice’ is a novella in the ‘Bound and the Broken’ series. I enjoyed it. In short, this series is a dragon-rider fantasy story in the vein of Eragon, where a hero and his dragon must defeat an evil empire. This novella is a prequel, about the origin of the dragon egg from the series proper. The heroes have to travel to a distant Antarctica like-land to steal an egg… but to steal that egg, they have to contend with furious blizzards, furious demons, and furious dragons.
Book 2 in the DCC series. This is the third Progression Fantasy/LitRPG series I’ve read, after ‘Cradle’ and ‘Arcane Ascension.’ While I enjoy all three, I think DCC is shaping up to be the best of the three. I enjoy Dungeon Crawler Carl’s humor. It’s not a comedy series, in the sense that the characters are constantly telling jokes; the series lacks puns, joke characters or humorous dialog. The humor is in the absurdist situations the characters are placed in. For example, in this novel a villain collects Beanie Babies.
In this series, Earth has been destroyed by aliens and the few surviving members of mankind must now compete in a Dungeon and Dragons-inspired, reality TV bloodsport for the entertainment of said aliens. The heroes level up, gain skills and spells and equipment, and try their best to survive in a world out to kill them. Also there’s a talking cat, and she’s the best character in the series.
Book 3 in DCC. I enjoyed this novel the most of the three I’ve read so far.
