A Short Review for a Short Story
I received this book (the anthology BRIEF CASES) for free from the publisher for the purpose of review.
This was a pretty good short story. Dresden must go under cover to infiltrate a school and unravel a bullying mystery surrounding a good kid who just so happens to be half bigfoot.
I liked it, but I don’t think Butcher exercised his writing skills that much in writing this. The story involves a lot of common Harry Dresden tropes: a paragraph long explanation for magical sight, fights against supernatural creatures which Harry can’t win, pop culture references (in this case HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY), calling supernatural monsters ‘predators’ and normal folks ‘prey’. Using tropes isn’t a bad thing- the Dresdenverse is defined and strengthened by it’s use of these tropes. But there can be too much of a good thing, and for me at least this short story returned to the well to much in such a short space. Also, stories involving bullying strike a bit too close to home for my taste. Your results may vary.
Stay Sunny!
